The Richardson family - cultivating the art, craft and science of horticulture for three generations
We are proud of our 100-strong workforce made up of three generations of the Richardson family, colleagues with 30 years’ service and employees of different nationalities- combining decades of experience in horticulture.
“As chairman, I have the responsibility to manage BSI quality and environmental systems, credit control letters, technical and advisory letters, as well as supporting information for large quotations and company accreditations.
I have been involved in commercial growing all my life and also have a financial background. Prior to acquiring the Johnsons business in 1964, I sold fertilizer to commercial growers in Scotland.”
“As Group Managing Director I take a leading role in in ensuring delivery and the smooth running of all business obligations. In addition I have special responsibility for Finance, Systems, People, Administration and more recently Marketing.
With over 30 years’ service I have been involved in most areas of the business - I am just as likely to be found with a brush in my hand as I am negotiating with a corporate visitor”
“As joint managing director I’m responsible for amenity and retail sales, production, logistics, purchasing, maintenance, operations and stock.
We’ve been through a number of challenging years at Johnsons in terms of volumes of landscaping being reduced in line with expenditure, but we’ve come out as a stronger, leaner and more effective business.”
“As joint managing director I have a stake in sales, marketing and transport across the group, including looking after our 30-strong fleet.
I have over 30 years’ experience in the industry and believe it’s important to give something back and take part in discussions on changes and challenges we face within the sector. To do this I represent Johnsons at the HTA’s amenity suppliers group and chair the HTA Gardeners Benevolent Charity - Helping people working in horticulture who are in need of help.
My proudest achievement to date is receiving the HTA Pearson Medal for services to the industryand becoming president of the HTA Trade Association for two years running.”
“I have worked as the financial controller here at Johnsons for eight years now.
I have the job of managing finance and accounting across the company which includes internal and external reporting, cash flow, treasury, costing, budgeting and planning.
I trained in industry and becamse an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accounts (ACMA/CGMA) in 1991.
I have since held a number of senior finance positions in manufacturing and construction, all of which have qualified me to work in the varied and demanding environment that is commercial horticulture.”
“I joined Johnsons over 20 years ago after leaving the Royal Navy where I’m proud to have served my country.
As senior amenity sales manager I’m reponsible for a dedicated sales team of four personnel whose job it is to ensure that all sales are met, as well as interact with customers and ensure orders arrive on time and to specification. I have managed the supply of many large-scale projects during my time at Johnsons including the regeneration of parks, supermarkets and business parks.”
“Having worked for the business for 35 years I was recently presented with a long service award for my commitment to the company which was an extremely proud moment for me.
As the garden centre sales manager I’m responsible for new product development, formulating the annual sales and marketing plan, managing the retail sales team, setting the annual sales budget, putting together the annual production and purchasing plan, managing key accounts and putting together the weekly availability list with the latest deals for our garden centre buyers.”
“As the production manager here at Johnsons I have the responsibility for the annual production and product development of all our plants, raising millions each year. I’ve worked at the company for 30 years and hold a Higher National Diploma in Horticulture. I’m also a member of the HTA Technical Committee and a panel member of the AHDB (Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board).
More recently I’ve been busy hosting our new training days for landscape architects to help broaden their knowledge of planting in the landscape.”
“My role as operations manager covers the company’s amenity and retail operations. I ensure orders are picked and collected to the correct quality prior to dispatch and deal with incoming goods to ensure they are unloaded correctly and meet the correct quality, stock control, dispatch and order administration.
I joined the business aged 16 and have been in various roles within the company in that time. At Johnsons I’ve had the opportunity to gain a City and Guilds 1 & 2 qualification in Horticulture, as well as undergo Institute of Leadership and Management training. I’m also a member of the HTA Tree and Hedging Steering Group.”
“My career in horticulture spans 24 years, 20 of those being at Johnsons. Throughout my career I’ve gained a full range of technical, management and planning skills which has helped me in my position as senior procurement manager.
In 2000 I was proud to be named ‘Young Horticulturist of the Year’. Johnsons has been very supportive of my further studies, and in January 2016 I achieved the Professional Diploma in Procurement and Supply (MCIPS), while juggling work and family commitments.”
As I.T & Systems Manager I’m responsible for managing all aspects of I.T including system builds, software development, database maintenance, networking, telephony, budgeting and personnel.
I joined the company straight from university after studying BSc Hons Business Information Systems in Leeds.
I’ve enjoyed 17 years at Johnsons and am particularly proud of developing the SAP system - integrating custom and third party software, providing enhanced functionality to key departments.
In my spare time I enjoy water skiing and doing DIY around the home.
